Infrared asphalt seam heater

InterCombustion offers a unique system for heating longitudinal seams.

A vulnerable part of any asphalt paving project is the longitudinal seams, which occur when the asphalt layers are constructed in multiple lanes. In the range of these longitudinal seams, where hot asphalt is placed along cold asphalt, quality losses such as grain breakouts or cracks are inevitable. The InterCombustion Infrared seam heater, a metal fiber asphalt seam heater, constitutes the ultimate solution to this problem.

The basis for the efficient heating system is a metal fiber burner. This burner generates a large amount of high temperature infra-red radiation at a low level of gas consumption. The wavelength of this infra-red radiation is such that it is well absorbed by all types of asphalt. The key advantage of this energy source is that the heat penetrates deep into the asphalt base  – even at full production speed of the paving machine – without burning the bitumen.

By heating the seam with an appropriate amount of energy by means of infrared radiation the ‘cold’ asphalt becomes sufficiently heated in this way, the transition on the seam between hot and cold asphalt will become compact enough so that no seam will be visible later on.

Use of the InterCombustion heater greatly improves the quality of longitudinal seams in asphalt construction. The heating system can easily be mounted by means of a lightweight aluminum support on the spreader beam of a paving machine. This aluminum support is designed in such a way that it neither damages the beam nor reduces its efficiency. In addition, the InterCombustion heater system is constructed to follow every maneuver of the paving machine. The heater system will switch on and off automatically when the paving machine starts and stops.

Advantages

  • Immediate heat progression without contact with a flame
  • Even and steady distribution and good penetration of the heat
  • No burning of bitumen
  • Can easily be assembled by two people (40 kg)
  • Secure heating with low gas consumption (6 kg of propane gas per hour), also for liquid gas (car gas)
  • Switches on and off automatically by coupling to the paving machine
  • Lightweight aluminum support (optional)
  • Can easily be transported in a heavy duty case (optional)
